7-Data Card Recovery is mainly intended to recover data lost from memory cards, like the ones you use with your photo camera and mobile phone. It supports practically all card formats, including SD, MicroSD, SDHC, CF, MMC and xD Picture cards. Moreover, it works with practically any other storage device, such as hard disks and pen drives. It is good that this tool can actually recover all types of data, and it can identify multiple file formats, as the ones commonly used for photographs, video, audio, documents, databases and email messages.
The product’s interface is very intuitive. Although the application is pre-configured to work with inserted data cards, with a push of a button, you can make it recognize other drives regardless of their type and file system as well. There is a wizard to take you through a basic workflow consisting of selecting a source drive, searching for lost data, picking whatever you need to rescue and proceeding to recover. It is a pity that, unlike other similar tools, 7-Data Card Recovery has a single search mode, which means that there is no way to perform a faster (and less accurate) scan. In addition, you cannot save the results, which means that, if you quit the tool, you will have to start scanning from scratch.
The results show both existing and deleted files organized in directories. Thus, you can recover individual files as well as complete folders. You also have the opportunity to search for specific names. Luckily, there is a built-in file viewer supporting most picture formats, while other types of files are shown as text and hexadecimal code.
When I tested the tool with a USB memory stick from which I had intentionally deleted some files, it successfully found the missing files and even allowed me to view some of them. However, the real effectiveness of the program could not be verified, as its trial version does not allow recovering even sample data.
All in all, 7-Data Card Recovery seems to recover lost files successfully (otherwise they could not be previewed). You should also know that it is part of a family of very similar tools by the same developer (Recovery Suite, Photo Recovery, Partition Recovery and Android Recovery), which are, in fact, the same product with light modifications.
